The leading airline in Tanzania, Fastjet, announced the return of its Kilimanjaro to Nairobi route – effective 6 October (2016).
Airline experts predict this will heat up existing competition between Fastjet and both Kenya Airways and Precision Air. This site reported earlier that Air Tanzania could also be in the mix soon as it is in the process of making two new Bombardier Q400NG turboprops operational. Both planes are expected to operate on regional routes.
Expansion plans at Fastjet has also fuelled speculation that new CEO Nico Bezuidenhout will move his head office to Africa. Up to now it’s been rather remotely situated at Gatwick Airport south of London.
Bezuidenhout, who used to be CEO of South African Airways’ very successful low-cost carrier Mango, was earlier this year headhunted to lead Fastjet, which has a focus on low-cost air routes in Africa.
