Entebbe Airport (Airport code – EBB) serves the capital of Uganda, Kampala. Taxis from Entebbe to Kampala charge UGX 85,000, which is around €25 for the 40km journey. It can take up to an hour. The best way to get around the city is by metered taxi (Blue Cruise, tel. 414574898), or if you are brave-hearted, try a motorcycle taxis called ‘boda boda’. Insist on wearing a helmet.
Thanks to the Kampala Commonwealth Summit of 2007 Kampala offers a wide range of accommodation, including several 5* hotels. Try the upmarket Kampala Serena (Kampala Kintu Road, 732123333, serenahotels.com/serenakampala) or the Sheraton Kampala (Ternan Avenue, 414-420000, sheraton.com/kampala) in the heart of the city with 236 guest rooms.
Alternatives include Emin Pasha Hotel (Plot 27, Akii Bua Road in Nakasero, 414236977, eminpasha.com) or Humara Resort (Plot 3, Kitante Close in Nakulabye, 414700400, humarauganda.com).
We would personally recommend local dishes like tilapia stew and chicken luwombo, steamed in banana leaves, at 2K (Plot 176, Nakulabye Road, Bakuli).
For Greek platters try At Mythos Greek Taverna and Lounge (Plot 18 Impala Road, 790916183). They also serve grilled meats and have a good wine list.
The menu at Meditteraneo (31 John Babiha Ave in Acacia, 414500533) includes wood-fired pizzas, fresh pastas and specialities like veal scaloppini.
The Craft Market (Buganda Road, 312295363) stocks, among other things, statuettes and hand-made jewellery, while the Farmer’s Market at Prunes (Plot 8, Wampewo Avenue, 772712002) is where you’ll find fresh produce and breads.
Uganda National Mosque (Old Kampala Road) is a five-domed structure with a 50m-high minaret for 360 degree city views. You can also visit the Baha’i Temple (Kikaya Hill, 41540511, bahai.org).
Kampala Boda Boda City Tours (facebook.com/pages/Kampala-Boda-Boda-City-Tours) takes you to the best sights on the back of a boda boda motorbike (with a crash helmet). Guided tours are catered to individual tastes.
